Who we are

What is Independent Methodism all about?

Emerging from the wellspring of Wesleyan Methodism, the Independent Methodist denomination in the UK bears a name that accurately reflects its origins. Many of its earliest congregations were formed by individuals and groups who felt compelled to separate from the main Methodist body.

Beyond their Methodist heritage, some early Independent Methodist communities were also significantly influenced by Quaker principles. Mirroring the Quaker tradition, Independent Methodists uphold a belief in the spiritual equality of all members, eschewing a formal distinction between clergy and laity. While they do designate individuals to serve as ministers, this role is understood within the context of shared ministry rather than a hierarchical structure.

While they value their independence, all Independent Methodist churches also recognize the benefits of fellowship and cooperation, coming together for mutual support, shared mission initiatives, and the maintenance of common theological understandings. Their theological framework remains firmly rooted in Wesleyan Arminianism, emphasizing personal conversion, the free grace of God, and active engagement in fellowship.
